The first trekkars in the Nepal were,of course, mountaineers who were either on thair way to climb peaks or were exploring routes up unclimbed peaks. There was furious mountaineering activity in Nepal from 1950 th the 1960s and all the 8000 metre peaks were climbed during this time.
since 1978 the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has had the authority to issue permission for small-scale attempts on 18 peks.it is not necessary to go through a long application process, hire and equip a liaison officer or organise a huge assault on a major peak on order to try Himalayan mountaineering. The 18 'trekking peaks' provide a large range of difficulty and are situated through out Nepal.
Two organisations control climbing in Nepal. The Ministry of Tourism is responsible for major expedition and the Nepal Mountainering Association issues permits for the peaks that are open to trekking groups. The type of climbing that appeals to most trekkers is encompassed by the regulations for small peaks.
